The surprise billing and protecting consumers was put into place as of January 1, 2022. Practices have struggled to put something together for their patients to be in compliance and that makes sense. Part of the focus of the Act was to ensure practices did not ‘balance bill’ the patient. Another part is to give decent estimates to the patient of what they will owe.

American Physician has created an Excel spreadsheet that can assist you in producing estimates. It takes into consideration your commercial fee structures, your practice pattern and what services each patient may need. Once individualized to your practice, it is easy for your staff to use.

There are two documents attached. The first is the Excel worksheet WORKSHEET itself and the second is a step-by-step guide GUIDE on how to modify the spreadsheet for your practice.

Were it my practice, I would develop three or four different Patient Responsibility Worksheets. I would have one that is specific to your top three our four commercial payers using actual allowed amounts from those payers. The final worksheet would be an average allowed amount you receive from your remaining commercial payers. Once you modify the worksheet to fit how you practice/what services you offer, it is pretty easy to then input the various allowed amounts. I hope you find this tool of some use. If you have questions on using or modifying it, please do reach out to me.
