Keep Your Medicare On

CMS (Medicare) is systematically sending out letters to their participating Medicare providers requesting re-validation for both individual and group entities based upon your NPI numbers. You may have already received yours, or you may not have gotten this request yet.
What Medicare is asking for is updated information on all of their providers. If you have been practicing for a number of years, it is likely that the Medicare enrollment information provided to NPPES (administrator for the NPI database) is no longer current. They may have an old tax ID number associated with you, old practice addresses, and practice ID numbers that are no longer valid. This can be easily updated through the NPPES and PECOS systems. If you have an NPI number, chances are that you already have a log-in for both systems and only need to go in and update each of the required fields.
You may need to send some follow up paperwork to complete the process, but it really is quite painless. What is painful is the fact that if this is not completed in the required timeframe they will remove your participating status and no longer pay your claims. Watch the mail closely, and respond immediately upon receiving these requests. Don’t wait until you stop getting paid to address this issue as the delays in processing of your claims can extend to two months or more.
