| With the start of the new year, it is very important to ask your patients for a copy of their insurance card. It is not uncommon for the patient to have changed insurance carriers through their work. Obtaining the new card (or double checking the old one) will save a lot of time and money.
How can checking the patient insurance card save money? If they changed carriers, you will need a new authorization. The old authorization with the old payer will no longer be valid. Having a denial for no authorization is a quick way to not receive payment. Of special consideration is Medicare patients. Be sure to ask your Medicare patients if they have perhaps signed up with a new Medicare plan. If they have started with a Medicare Advantage plan, you will need to obtain an authorization with that advantage plan before providing treatment. |
